FCSSSP

The Floyd Country Special Students Summer Program is a non-profit organization established in 2009 by dedicated college freshmen who are driven to help high school-aged persons with disabilities in the Floyd County area. The program is aimed towards helping these students realize their tremendous potential and skills that each one of them possess, and teaching them how to harness these abilities in order to make a comfortable living in society.

Over the last summer, the organization ran on a 1:1 student to volunteer ratio, and will run on a 1:1 or 1:2 ratio over the coming summer, based on the nature and severity of students disabilities. Through this high ratio, students are able to work intensively on their social skills, and develop deep and meaningful relationships with peers who they will see in school and around their communities.

Our program stands firmly behind the term “persons with disabilities”. We believe in this terminology because our students and persons like our students are persons first. We do not believe in acknowledging their disabilities before their being. Our students are very unique and beautiful people coming from all walks of life.
